2 Months In London

Rhymes with 'Last Train To London'

If only you knew.

Whilst we're on the subject didja hear Poor Edwards died. Death by bale. Harsh.

London, don't'cha know, is... Londonish.

Am 2 months into a 6 monther with a well known north american investment bank. Is v boring, just lots of Sybase scripts and back office extracts. Ooooh Matron.

Unemployed...

... or as a thesp would say; 'resting between contracts'

Unfortunate that the project I was working on in Glasgow was canned. Ah well. That's life (for contractors). I had 2 interviews on Monday and 3 on Tuesday and 4 firm offers on Friday; following a lot of horse trading I've rejected two, and accepted one, pending background checks (it's for another Investment Bank).

I'm holding the last in backup pending disasters around the credit score/ criminal record front. Not that I have a criminal record or CCJs, but, don't let go of your options until the ink is drying on the contract, is what I always say.

This weekend has been filled with flying (circuit bashing to maintain currency), building a tree house for the small one, and strimming. Oh, and a cassoulet with confitted pheasant. Mmm.

Oh, and per last month's post: I now have an ESXi box with a six core Phenom and its GREAT!

A Good Weekend

Eh, its been a while.

A good weekend was had by this Young Turk.
Saturday turned up at Tattenhill and went for an hour's refresher with an instructor in a PA28, then 1hr 20 with the examiner. Passed. W00t!!1!. So now got me wings back for another 2 years.

Sunday, sailing! Went for a jolly zoom around in a Laser Pico, sorta almost small ennought to be classed a bath toy, but nonetheless good clean fun. Ahem.

What else is new? Well, still in Glasgow, still working hard, contract coming up for renewal so who knows what next, the markets still pretty depressed rate-wise so I'd like an extension... let us see.

Still no further with NTP, various issues with servers and dev tool livences are being worked out as I type, so hopefully by next week I will be the proud owner of a 6 core Phenom running 4 VMs under ESXi. Watch this space.

Saturday 1 May 2010

And so it goes....

...from dealing with ultra complex high availability ESX issues, to....
a colicking horse on a Saturday night, ending with the vet administering half a bucket (thats like, a BIG bucket!) of Epsom salts and electrolytes, via nasal tube, at 9pm.

NOW I need a glass of wine LOL!

Oh, added a few photos from Glasgae... see Picasa...

(Look! It really DOES look like a wing!)

Overheard by the water cooler

Overheard by the water cooler:

"How can a programmer fail to understand arrays?
Its like a baker not getting yeast, or a politician not understanding lies."

:)

Three days to go and I'm outta here! W00t!!1!

Overheard at work...

I overheard this at work today. Made me chuckle:

I have to write all these blasted 'DummyViewModels' so the boss can work in Expression Blend because he's an absinthe drinking 'artist'

He'll probably come in with an ear missing on Monday

Superb. :)

Monday 22 March 2010

What a weekend.

Well, its all go here. Got the contract through from the agency for the new position, so moving on after 3 years in my current job - off to work for a bank in their Wealth Management department so quite exciting.

So this weekend, I was out riding a horse when it decided to gallop off under a tree - I and the horse departed company, and now I have a big bruise on my arm where the tree hugged me. Damn.

Later on, I walked into a door and near enough knocked myself out. Damn.

This morning I woke up to find I had left a pan of chicken stock on the stove all night - it was a bit smelly and burnt. Damn.

So, a bit eventful. :)

I have some photos of Chatsworth and Glasgow added to my album.

Number 3 of a list of 627 really idiotic things to do with Twitter

"A Twitter user who posted a "joke" bomb threat against a UK airport could be jailed after pleading guilty to sending a menacing message...[he] has already been suspended from work and banned from Robin Hood Airport for life"

The whole story here

What a plonker.

Converting from local to UTC in C#

Its one of thse things that should be easy.
However if you get your DateTime from a database it will be anonymous, i.e. it will not have its kind set.
So, do this:

DateTime ConvertFromLocalToUTC(DateTime localTime)
{
DateTime anon = new DateTime(localTime.Ticks, DateTimeKind.Local);
DateTime dtUTC = anon.ToUniversalTime();
return dtUTC;
}

Oh, and, in other news, happy Imbolc!
